I feel affection for these objects through your eyes. Your paintings are quite lovely. I especially like the bottle and the way you captured its light.
I hear what you say about taking breaks and this is a perfect way to do it (I wish I could paint, I can't!) because what a lot of us do, I'm sure, is check our phone/social media and that really isn't a break, it's something that crowds the brain (I am aware of the irony of what I am writing right here on Substack!)
This is not something I planned to share with anyone but I sometimes take breaks to dance. No one can see me, and it'll only be one song, but it's quicker than taking a walk and seems to release emotion which is often what I run out of when writing.
I do hope you are clear of your deadline soon and can go back to your easel: it's valuable to you and creates beautiful art.
Thank you for sharing these glimpses into your painting life. I am in awe of artists who can write as well as make other art! And also: "the mean-girl who lives rent-free in my head"...I think I know her too 😃
I love the swans in particular, but the light you still manage to capture even in the non-painterly conditions is still there. I'm slightly envoius of these breaks... During my writing breaks, I'm usually sorting laundry, or eating or drinking #priorities . Sometimes I'll go for a walk, but I'm squeezing everything in during the time my kids are at school so it often feels rushed and squeezed.
Perhaps when my renovations are in a better state I'll find some space for a small easel.
Thank you! I only managed to do this for part of the fall, and I have to say, it was a little tiring in the end. It was lovely, but not really a break-break, since the painting also took a lot of concentration. Now I'm back to less artsy breaks, but I hope to get back to painting again in the new year once my book is turned in.
I am knocked out by your paintings. I've been dabbling -- the word is carefully chosen -- with a lot of formats: colored pencil, mosaic, decoupage, paper-cutting. So envious that you are talented in so many forms.
Absolutely beautiful! I could stare at these forever and I greatly appreciate your words and perspective. Lately I've been trying to hype myself out of my fear of oils to give them a try. I could stare at oil paintings forever (especially sketches and studies) and never get bored.
Lovely paintings and fits so well with the topic of breaks to make other types of art. You are so very talented. I especially love the perfume bottle and the way the label is slightly worn obscuring the name.
I'm learning to take breaks and just color with glitter gel pens. Something mindless and I've been taking myself rollerskating at the local outdoor roller hockey rink. Something about tapping into childhood brings a fresh look to my writing when I return to the page. And of course a good trail run never disappoints.
Loved the topic combined with beautiful artwork. Eye candy. Thank you.

I quite often will put a song on really loud and sing my heart out. Also releases emotion.
I love this! And thank you—deadlines looming!
I love the connection between painting and writing and getting to truth and honesty about what is seen and what is there.
Thank you Juli. I think about this a lot.
Your drawings of the swans are especially beautiful. ❤️
Thank you so much!
Absolutely love the perfume bottle. 😍
Thank you! It looks better in person, seen from across a room ☺️
What a thing to have so much creative talent and energy to braid together. So inspiring:)
You're too kind!

Totally get that. I've a mental image of you in your Parisian garrat writing and painting 🎨😅
These are stunning 😍 please keep sharing your art !
Thank you!
Really enjoyed your observations on the act of painting. As a painter hoping to write like I paint as well so I especially enjoyed that thought.
💞
Beautiful work, Summer.
Thank you!
BEAUTIFUL...ty

Laura! Omg thank you 💜 I have been messing around with watercolor for a few years now before feeling brave enough to try oils again.
Thanks for sharing. Good luck both with writing and painting!
I wonder what would you say of zentangle dot com (my new found hobby).

What a wonderful compliment, thank you so much. I could stare at paintings forever too.
